모국어습득방식 스피킹강화 프로그램, 헬렌도론

지난주 수요일, 헬렌도론 여사님께서 한국을 방문하시어 

베나야 한국 대표님과 함께 '헬렌도론 교육' 에 관한 

경기도 고양시 일산 고양신문의 인터뷰를 진행하였습니다.

헬렌도론 교육의 핵심은 무엇인가요?

What is the main principles of HD?

The main principle is that all learning should be joyful and stress-free. English can be learnt naturally and effortlessly, 

just the way a child learns his mother tongue language. Following the natural progression of language learning, 

the Helen Doron methodology allows children to learn to speak and understand English before they learn to read and write. 

This method works with babies, toddlers, children and teens. 

헬렌도론 교육의 핵심은 스트레스 없이 재미있게 배워야 한다는 것입니다. 영어는 아이가 모국어를 배우는 것처럼 자연스럽게 

또 힘들일 필요 없이 배울 수 있습니다. 언어습득의 자연스런 과정에 발맞춰 헬렌도론 교수법은 아이가 읽고 쓰기를 배우기 전에 

영어를 이해하고 말하는 법을 배울 수 있도록 자연스럽게 유도합니다. 

이 방식은 유아부터 영아, 어린이, 청소년 모두에게 해당되는 효과적인 방식입니다.

모국어처럼 영어를 자연스럽게 습득하는 것은 모든 엄마들의 희망입니다. 

어떻게 이 교육법을 만들게 되셨나요?

All moms desire that their child learns English naturally like their native language. 

How did you come about creating this methodology?

When my daughter Ella began learning violin with the Suzuki method she learnt music in a mother tongue manner, 

first make music and then learn to read later.  For me, this was a revelation. 

I thought, if there is a mother-tongue way to teach music, why don’t we have a mother-tongue way to teach language? 

If Suzuki is teaching the language of music, why aren’t we teaching the music of language? 

This was the foundation for my methodology.

제 딸 Ella가 스즈키 교본으로 바이올린을 배울 때, 아이가 모국어를 습득하는 방식으로 음악을 배운다는 인상을 받았습니다. 

음악을 먼저 접하고 추후에 악보를 읽는 방식으로 말이죠. 그것은 저에게 계시나 다름 없었습니다. 

그 순간 만약 음악을 모국어처럼 가르칠 수 있다면, 언어도 그런 방식으로 가르치면 어떨까 하는 생각이 들었죠. 

스즈키가 음악의 언어를 가르친다면 우리는 언어의 음악을 가르쳐 보자란 생각이 미쳤고, 이것이 제 교수법의 토대가 되었습니다.

헬렌도론 교육시스템을 완성하는데 얼마나 시간이 걸렸고,

그동안 어려움은 없으셨는지요?

How long did it take to make this kind of education system? as it is unusual, and doesn’t exist in korea.

This system has been developed and improved over the last 31 years, in the beginning no one believed it, 

but once the results started showing, people in israel adopted it very quickly, after that, Germany was the first European company, 

and the company natuarally grew since. We are constantly working hard to improve our quality of courses as well as our contents. 

Courses are continuously re-written and improved – it is a long and constant process, but it is why we are market leaders. 

Education always comes first.

저희 교육시스템은 지난 31년간 개발되었고 지속적으로 개선되어 왔습니다. 

초기에는 어느 누구도 이 방법을 신빙하지 않았지만, 서서히 그 효과가 입증되자 이스라엘 사람들은 재빨리 저희 교육방식을 취하기 시작했고, 

그 후 유럽에서 최초로 독일에 지사가 세워지며 저희 사업은 자연스럽게 물살을 탔습니다.

저희는 콘텐츠 뿐 아니라 수업의 질을 향상시키기 위해 부단히 노력하고 있습니다. 수업은 지속적으로 수정되고 개선되고 있습니다. 

이 작업은 끝이 없어 쉽지 않지만, 아마도 이러한 연유로 저희가 시장의 선두기업이 되지 않았나 싶습니다. 

아시다시피, 어느 사회에서나 교육은 언제나 최우선의 가치이기 때문입니다.

영어를 모국어처럼 습득하면, 

정작 모국어인 한국어를 제대로 배울 수 있는 기회를 놓치는 건 아닐까요?

If children are learning English like their mother tongue, doesn't it interfere with learning their native language?

Learning a second or even third language will not interfere with a child’s learning his native tongue. 

Children can learn any number of languages simultaneously if they are presented to them in a systematic,

constant and ongoing manner. Children are born with the ability to absorb, use and recognize any sound. 

Children’s brains are looking for stimulation, for connection. Once connected, they will stay connected for life.  

Early connections last. You can never be too young to learn.

Ground breaking research confirms that children exposed to a second or third language by the age of 7 learn these languages 

as a mother tongue and they are able to differentiate between them quite successfully. 

With 6,000 languages and just over 200 countries, clearly most children in the world are bilingual or multilingual.

제2외국어 혹은 제3 외국어를 습득하는 것은 아이의 모국어습득을 방해하지 않습니다. 

만약 아이들이 지속적이고 잘 짜여진 방식으로 언어에 노출된다면, 얼마든지 다양한 언어를 동시에 배울 수가 있습니다. 

아이들은 선천적으로 어떤 소리든지 받아들이고 사용하고 또 인지할 수 있는 능력이 있기 때문입니다. 아이의 뇌는 자극과 연결고리를 찾습니다. 

일단 연결되기만 하면 연결된 뇌세포는 평생 동안 떨어지지 않습니다. 조기에 뇌세포를 연결하는 것이 평생을 좌우하게 되는 것이지요. 

너무 어려서 배울 수 없다는 것은 어불성설입니다.세상을 떠들썩하게 했던 한 연구에 따르면, 7살 전까지 제2 혹은 제3외국어에 노출된 아이는 

모국어처럼 언어를 습득할 수 있고 각각의 언어를 구별할 수 있다는 능력이 있다는 사실이 밝혀졌습니다. 

현재, 전 세계 200국 중 약 6,000개가 넘는 언어가 사용되고 있는 상황에서, 대부분의 아이가 이중언어나 다중언어를 사용하고 있습니다.

아드님께서 헬렌도론 코리아 대표를 맡고 계시다고 들었습니다. 

헬렌도론 교육의 첫 번째 수혜자였던 아드님이 한국 대표로 임명하신 건 한국이 그만큼 중요해서인지요.

We know that your son is the CEO of HD Korea. 

Your son was one of the first students of HD and Korea is that much of an important country in your opinion for HD right?

I am quite pleased that Korea benefits from the talents and the leadership of one of the first Helen Doron English students. 

Although Benaya is a native English speaker and was born before Helen Doron English came about, 

he completely understands the methodology and the vision and will guide Korea successfully. Korea is important. 

Benaya has a Korean wife and son. Rohan began learning with Helen Doron English at the age of the months!

저는 헬렌도론 영어수업의 첫 번째 수혜자인 제 아들이 한국에서 그의 재능과 리더십을 발휘하고, 

한국 또한 그 혜택을 누릴 것이라는 생각에 기쁩니다.  한국에서 영어교육을 성공적으로 이끌 것이라는 

믿음에 한치의 의심도 없습니다. Benaya에게는 한국인 부인, 그리고 아들 Rohan이 있기 때문에 그에게도 한국은 매우 중요한 나라입니다. 

심지어 제 손자 Rohan은 태어난 지 겨우 몇 개월이 지나지 않은 상황에서 헬렌도론 영어 수업을 듣기 시작했습니다.

이곳은 고양시입니다. 한국에는 헬렌도론 정규 교육을 받을 수 있는 곳이 아직 많지 않습니다. 

헬렌도론 오픈지역중, 고양이 두 번째라고 들었습니다. 고양에 먼저 오픈하시게 된 배경을 듣고 싶습니다. 

또 앞으로 몇 곳의 교육센터를 계획하고 계신지도 듣고 싶습니다.

We are here in Goyang-si. There are not many places where you can attend HD lessons. Goyang is the second location after Dongtan. 

What were some reasons that you opened here and what are some future plans for HD centers?

We decided to start in “New Towns” because of the high number of children and highly educated parents, 

who are interested in quality education, while keeping their children’s happiness.

Once we establish our brand in predominant suburbs, 

we feel that seoul parents will also see that high results can be reached without stress.

저희가 고양시에서 처음으로 사업을 시작하게 된 배경은, 

이 곳에 상당한 수의 아이들과 아이가 행복하게 질 높은 교육을 받기를 바라는 학부모의 니즈가 있다고 판단했기 때문입니다. 

일단 저희 브랜드가 교육열이 높은 교외지역에서 성공하면, 분명 서울권역 부모들도 스트레스 없이 영어를 배울 수 있는 

저희 교육철학에 관심을 가지게 될 것이라 생각합니다. 

영어교육에 ‘목숨 거는’ 한국의 엄마들에게 도움이 될 수 있는 말씀을 듣고 싶습니다.

Do you have anything to say to the many Korean mom's who "go to the extreme" for their children's English education?

Parents can have a significant impact on the success of their child’s learning experience. 

Our youngest learners, up to the age of 3, benefit from having a parent in the classroom. 

Parental presence ensures that the child feels safe and comfortable in his or her new surroundings; 

it enhances the child’s self-esteem and, gives parents a better understanding of the learning programme. 

For students of all ages, parents are encouraged to play the CD and/or DVD soundtracks, and show videos, 

where relevant–materials essential to background hearing and support learning at every opportunity.

I think it is a wonderful thing to fully support your child’s learning and this backing can truly help a child succeed in his learning. 

We believe that a strong family cell helps children reach their full potential. 

I say, “bravo” and “well-done” to Korean mothers for their encouragement and dedication to their child’s learning. 

They are our type of mothers and I can identify with them completely.

아이가 성공적인 학습경험을 쌓기 위해서는 부모의 역할이 매우 중요합니다. 

헬렌도론 수업에서는 최하연령부터 3살까지 부모와 함께 하는 수업을 통해 아이들이 많은 것을 얻을 수 있습니다. 

수업 내 부모의 존재는 아이들에게 안정감을 주고 새로운 환경을 보다 편안하게 받아들이게 합니다. 

더불어 아이의 자아존중감을 강화하고, 부모들이 학습프로그램을 보다 잘 이해할 수 있는 기회를 제공합니다. 

저희는 전 연령대의 학생을 지닌 부모에게 흘려듣기를 하는데 필수적인 내용을 담고 있는 CD를 틀어주거나 DVD를 보여주도록 

적극적으로 권장하고 있습니다. 더불어 틈 날 때마다 부모들로 하여금 아이들의 학습을 돕도록 권유합니다.

부모가 아이의 배움을 전적으로 지지하고 열성적으로 도와주는 것은 아이가 성공적으로 무언가를 터득하는데 상당한 효과를 가져다 줍니다. 

헬렌도론은 끈끈한 가족애가 아이들의 잠재력을 최대한도로 뽑아내는데 상당한 도움이 된다고 굳게 믿고 있습니다.  

저는 아이들의 교육에 상당한 열의와 헌신을 보이는 한국 어머니들에게 경의를 표합니다. 

분명 한국 어머니들은 헬렌도론이 취하는 철학과 같은 태도를 취하고 있으며, 저는 그 점을 분명히 알아볼 수 있습니다.
